GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Carry a reminder of Southern California’s changing supermarket landscape with this Market Basket Double-Sided Keychain Charm. From its first Pasadena store in 1930 to a regional network of 42 locations by 1959, Market Basket became part of everyday life for many communities. The name disappeared in 1982, then returned in 1989 for a brief second era. It makes a thoughtful small keepsake for local-history fans and collectors of regional grocery brands.
Market Basket was the name of two separate supermarket chains in Southern California. The first began in Pasadena, where its first store opened on Colorado Boulevard at Meredith in 1930. It had 14 Pasadena-area stores by 1934 and 42 locations by 1959, reaching as far as Santa Ana and San Bernardino. Kroger bought the chain in 1963, when its annual sales were $121 million. In 1982, Kroger left the competitive Southern California supermarket business and broke up the 65-store chain, selling many stores to Ralphs, Boys, Albertsons, Hughes and Vons and closing the rest. The Market Basket name was retired, though Kroger retained California brand rights. In 1989, Boys Markets paid Kroger for the right to use the name in Southern California and rebranded 17 suburban stores. Yucaipa acquired Boys Markets a few weeks later. By 1991, the stores were part of Food 4 Less, owned by Yucaipa Co. The brand was retired after Yucaipa acquired Ralphs in 1994 and the chains were consolidated under Ralphs or Food 4 Less.
