GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Carry a piece of Maryland retail history on your travels with this Mars Passport Cover. The family grocery business started in 1943 when Joseph D'Anna opened a store on Old Eastern Avenue, then grew into a familiar chain across the Baltimore area. Generations of family leadership and neighborhood locations made Mars part of local shopping life before the company announced its stores would close in 2016. A distinctive keepsake for former customers and collectors of independent supermarkets.
Mars was a family-run grocery chain in the Baltimore, Maryland, area. Joseph D'Anna opened its first store on Old Eastern Avenue in 1943, after choosing the name from Mars Estates, an apartment complex in Essex. After a partnership with Bob Baum, the business moved south to Dundalk, where Joseph sold his interest to his brothers Angelo and Carmen. The brothers expanded the company, opening a Grey Manor store in 1954 and a Middle River store in 1958. Anthony joined the business in 1949, became a partner in 1955, and later served as vice president and senior grocery buyer. Mars continued to add locations, including a store that replaced its Old North Point Road location at Lynch Manor on Wise Avenue. Angelo died in January 1995, and Carmen became president; after Carmen's death in August 1997, his son Vito became president. Mars operated its own Baltimore distribution center until closing it in March 2014 and changing its supply arrangements. In May 2016, the company announced that all 13 stores would close by July 31. Weis Markets acquired five locations, while Mars sought other retailers for the remaining eight. The company had filed for bankruptcy in 2016.
