Make room for notes, plans, or recollections of local shopping with this Marsh Supermarkets Spiral Notebook. Founded in Muncie, Indiana, in 1931, Marsh grew into a regional grocery chain recognized across central Indiana and western Ohio. Its history includes the Marsh family, a 1960 name change, the acquisition of O’Malia’s Food Markets, and an early grocery barcode scanner installed in Troy in 1974. For collectors and former customers, this notebook offers a useful way to keep the story of a once-familiar regional retailer close during everyday writing.
Founded by Ermal Marsh in Muncie, Indiana, in 1931, Marsh grew from a single store into a regional grocery chain. It went public in 1953, the year it operated 16 Marsh stores, and opened its first Ohio store in Van Wert in 1956. After Ermal’s death in 1959, his brother Estel became president. The business adopted the name Marsh Supermarkets in 1960; Don Marsh became president in 1968. In 1974, a Troy, Ohio, Marsh store became the first grocery store in the world to use a barcode scanner. The company acquired O’Malia’s Food Markets in 2001 and later converted three Mr. D’s stores to that banner. Sun Capital Partners acquired Marsh in 2006, taking it private, and separated Village Pantry convenience stores in 2007. Marsh filed for bankruptcy in May 2017 and was liquidated. Kroger subsidiary Topvalco acquired 11 stores, while Fresh Encounter acquired 15. Fresh Encounter rebranded 14 as Needler’s Fresh Market and one in Van Wert as Chief Supermarket. The remaining stores closed by July 2017, ending Marsh’s operations.
