Make a gathering feel a little more connected to Chicago’s past with this Marshall Field & Company can cooler. The name recalls the celebrated State Street store and the shopping traditions that made it a city landmark, from holiday window displays to the Walnut Room and Great Clock. Founded in 1852, the company grew through many changes before the Marshall Field’s stores were renamed in 2006. It is a fitting pick for collectors, Chicagoans, and anyone who remembers the store with affection.
Marshall Field & Company began in Chicago in 1852 as Potter Palmer’s dry goods store, P. Palmer & Company. Marshall Field joined Levi Z. Leiter and Palmer in partnership on January 4, 1865; after Palmer withdrew in 1867, the business became Field, Leiter & Company. Field bought out Leiter in 1881, giving the company its lasting name. The store survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, reopening within weeks, and became a major State Street shopping destination. Its wholesale and retail operations expanded, and branch stores followed in the late 1920s. The business later acquired department stores in other regions, including Frederick & Nelson in 1929 and Halle Brothers in 1970. British-American Tobacco acquired the company in 1982; Dayton-Hudson bought it in 1990, followed by May Company in 2004 and Federated Department Stores in 2005. In 2006, the Marshall Field’s stores were renamed Macy’s. The State Street flagship, in the historic Marshall Field and Company Building, became a Macy’s flagship while retaining historic nameplates and fixtures.
