Martz Group traces its origins to 1908, when Frank Martz Sr. founded the White Transit Company in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, to operate buses between Coal Region mining towns. In 1912 he began local routes in Luzerne County. In 1922 he established the Frank Martz Coach Company for intercity service; by 1927 its routes linked Wilkes-Barre with cities including New York, Philadelphia, Albany, Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago. Martz Sr. helped establish the National Trailways Bus System, an alliance of carriers forming a national bus network. After his death in 1936, his son Frank Martz Jr. took over; following Martz Jr.’s death in 1964, ownership passed to founder’s grandson Frank M. Henry. Ownership remains within the family, with fourth-generation president Scott Henry. The company is headquartered in Wilkes-Barre and operates services under brands including Martz Trailways, Martz Tours, Gold Line, Gray Line, National Coach Works, and First Class Coach Company Trailways. In 2016, Martz Group rebranded, added 116 coaches and operations in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Florida, and introduced Martz Luxury Service. Its offerings include intercity and commuter buses, charters, tours, and Amtrak Thruway connections.
