Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Remember a New York-area department-store name with this square porcelain fridge magnet honoring Mays Department Stores. The company grew from a Brooklyn clothing store founded in 1924, and its first Mays location opened on Fulton Street in September 1929. At its early-1970s peak, the chain had nine stores and about 5,000 employees, serving neighborhoods in New York City and nearby communities. Its final three stores announced closure in December 1988. This compact keepsake celebrates the local retail history that collectors still enjoy sharing at home.
Mays was a New York-area discount department store chain operated by J.W. Mays, Inc. Its roots were a Brooklyn women's clothing store founded in 1924 by Joe Weinstein, a Polish Jewish immigrant from Galicia. The first Mays location opened at 510 Fulton Street in Brooklyn in September 1929, the year Weinstein incorporated the company and added his initials to its name. The chain expanded through the 1950s and 1960s, reaching nine stores and about 5,000 employees in the early 1970s. Locations served three of New York City's five boroughs, Long Island, and Putnam County. Mays competed with other discount retailers and higher-end department stores; a proposed merger with two discount competitors did not happen. After losing market share in the late 1970s, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1982 and closed five stores outside New York City. In 1987 it closed one of its two Glen Oaks stores. The chain announced the immediate closure of its last three stores on December 28, 1988, with final sales on December 31. On January 1, 1989, J.W. Mays, Inc. returned to real estate, using property previously occupied by its stores.
