Celebrate Maywood Park, the Melrose Park harness-racing venue whose history began with a half-mile oval and grandstand built in 1931. After Illinois approved parimutuel racing, the track opened in 1946 and soon made broadcasting history with a full televised harness-race program. From a Breeders Crown race in 1984 to a celebrated 1995 track record, Maywood held a special place in local sports. Maywood Park was a harness-racing venue in Melrose Park, Illinois, about 12 miles from downtown Chicago. Arthur T. Galt purchased the land in 1922. In 1931, the Cook County Fair Association leased the property and built a grandstand and half-mile dirt oval for harness races; after its fair effort failed, Galt removed the association in 1934, while the improvements remained. Following Illinois approval of parimutuel racing, Maywood Park opened as a dedicated harness track in 1946. The Galt family owned the land, and the Maywood Trotting Association operated the races. In 1947, the venue hosted the first full harness-race program televised anywhere in the country. Its original grandstand was replaced by a larger enclosed structure in the mid-1960s. After a 1973 fire at Washington Park, two racing associations moved dates to Maywood. The track hosted a Breeders Crown race in 1984 and recorded notable performances, including a 1995 half-mile-track record by She's A Great Lady. A federal judgment connected to the scandal involving former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich led the association into bankruptcy. The Galt Family Trust later sold the land. Racing ended with the track's 2015 closure; demolition began in 2019, and an Amazon distribution center replaced it in 2020.
