Founded in Grand Rapids in 1946 as Michigan Clothiers, the company grew from a family clothing business into a chain spanning several states. The transition to sports equipment, footwear and apparel, acquisitions in 1987 and 1988, and the Miracle May promotion all shaped its identity. MC Sports closed in 2017, leaving former customers and collectors with a distinctive story to preserve.
MC Sports began in 1946 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as Michigan Clothiers, founded by Jack and Genevieve Finkelstein. The store initially sold men's clothing alongside military surplus items. Their sons Ed, Raleigh and Mort later ran the business as it shifted its focus from clothing to sports equipment, footwear and apparel. The chain expanded in 1987 by acquiring Morrie Mages' Sports, a three-store business in the Chicago area. In 1988, it acquired Browns Sporting Goods, adding 19 stores. MC Sports eventually operated more than 75 locations across Michigan, Ohio, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri and Iowa. It also promoted Miracle May each May, directing portions of featured-item sales and other proceeds to the Children's Miracle Network. The company announced a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in February 2017; the case was converted to Chapter 7 liquidation. After approval of the liquidation plan on February 16, going-out-of-business sales began at the 68 remaining stores. All locations closed by June 2017. At closure, MC Sports ranked as the 75th-largest sporting goods retailer in the United States.
