Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take the story of McAlpin's along on the road. Founded in Cincinnati in 1852 as Ellis, McAlpin & Co., the retailer opened its landmark Fourth Street store in 1880 and reached suburban shoppers at Western Hills in 1954. Its downtown building later found a new life as The McAlpin, while the stores took other names in 1998. This travel mug celebrates a distinctive local retail history for commuters, road trips, and collectors of Cincinnati keepsakes.
McAlpin's began in Cincinnati in 1852 as Ellis, McAlpin & Co. The department store opened its landmark downtown location on Fourth Street in 1880, taking over a building previously occupied by competitor Shillito's. In 1954, it became the first Cincinnati department store to open a suburban location, at Western Hills Shopping Center. About two decades later, McAlpin's became a division of Mercantile Stores. Mercantile moved its corporate headquarters to Fairfield, Ohio, in 1990. In 1998, Little Rock-based Dillard's bought Mercantile, and McAlpin's stores were converted to the Dillard's name that year, with one exception: the Dayton Mall location was sold to Elder-Beerman. The landmark downtown Cincinnati store had closed in 1996. Its building was later restored and reopened as The McAlpin, a 62-unit luxury condominium building. The company's history traces a path from a Cincinnati-founded retailer to a division of a larger retail group, followed by a change of store names and a new use for its downtown landmark.
