GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep a reminder of Cincinnati's changing retail landscape close at hand with this McAlpin's tough phone case. Founded as Ellis, McAlpin & Co. in 1852, the company became part of the city's story through its downtown Fourth Street landmark and its 1954 suburban opening at Western Hills Shopping Center. The downtown store closed in 1996, and its building later found new life as The McAlpin. For former shoppers and local history fans, this case connects everyday routines with a distinctive Cincinnati memory.
McAlpin's began in Cincinnati in 1852 as Ellis, McAlpin & Co. The department store opened its landmark downtown location on Fourth Street in 1880, taking over a building previously occupied by competitor Shillito's. In 1954, it became the first Cincinnati department store to open a suburban location, at Western Hills Shopping Center. About two decades later, McAlpin's became a division of Mercantile Stores. Mercantile moved its corporate headquarters to Fairfield, Ohio, in 1990. In 1998, Little Rock-based Dillard's bought Mercantile, and McAlpin's stores were converted to the Dillard's name that year, with one exception: the Dayton Mall location was sold to Elder-Beerman. The landmark downtown Cincinnati store had closed in 1996. Its building was later restored and reopened as The McAlpin, a 62-unit luxury condominium building. The company's history traces a path from a Cincinnati-founded retailer to a division of a larger retail group, followed by a change of store names and a new use for its downtown landmark.
