John McCrorey opened his first store in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, in 1882, and the J. G. McCrory Company had five Pennsylvania stores by 1885. McCrorey later dropped the final e from his surname for store-sign lettering. In 1915 the business became McCrory Stores Corporation. It grew into a five-and-dime retailer selling goods such as clothing, shoes, housewares, fabrics, toys, cosmetics, and penny candy, often with a lunch counter or snack bar. In 1933, amid the Great Depression, the company entered bankruptcy protection, was dissolved, and was eventually re-established. Meshulam Riklis purchased McCrory in 1960 and combined it with H. L. Green; headquarters moved to Springettsbury Township, Pennsylvania, in 1963. Acquisitions included J.J. Newberry in 1972, S.H. Kress in 1981, TG&Y in 1985, and G.C. Murphy in 1989. At its height, McCrory operated about 1,300 stores under multiple names. Changing retail competition brought closures and financial distress: it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1992 and again in 2001. Liquidation of remaining stores was announced in December 2001, and McCrory Stores ceased operation in February 2002.
