McDonnell Douglas Corporation was an American aerospace manufacturer and defense contractor formed on April 28, 1967, by the merger of McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and Douglas Aircraft Company. Its roots reached back to firms founded by James S. McDonnell and Donald W. Douglas: Douglas established his aircraft company in Los Angeles in 1921, while McDonnell founded his namesake aircraft corporation in 1938 near St. Louis, Missouri. The merged company kept its headquarters at Lambert–St. Louis International Airport in Berkeley, Missouri. Its aircraft included the DC-10 and MD-80 airliners, F-15 Eagle, F-4 Phantom II, and F/A-18 Hornet. Later developments included the MD-11 and MD-90, and its 1984 purchase of Hughes Helicopters expanded its helicopter business. Following financial and program challenges in the early 1990s, McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing in August 1997, with Boeing as the surviving company. The MD-95 design later entered production as the Boeing 717; the civilian helicopter business became MD Helicopters in 1999.
