It launched MCI Mail in 1983 and later built MCI.net, an important part of the Internet backbone. In 1998, WorldCom acquired MCI and the combined company became MCI WorldCom. The MCI name was later dropped; after WorldCom's 2002 bankruptcy, the company emerged in 2003 as MCI Inc.
