GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take a chapter of communications history along on your travels with this MCI Communications passport cover. Founded in 1963, MCI moved from an ambitious microwave relay plan to data services, switched long-distance calling, and a place in the story of early email and Internet networks. The 1998 WorldCom acquisition and the later return of the MCI name add a distinctive corporate-history turn. A fitting keepsake for travelers, brand collectors, and technology history enthusiasts.
Founded on October 3, 1963, as Microwave Communications, Inc., MCI began with a plan to build microwave relay stations between Chicago, Illinois, and St. Louis, Missouri. After regulatory approval in 1969, it developed regional links and began selling data transmission services in 1972. The company became a public corporation that year and, in 1975, started offering switched long-distance telephone service in competition with AT&T. Its legal challenge to AT&T, together with federal antitrust action, contributed to the Bell System breakup. MCI expanded through acquisitions including Western Union International in 1982, RCA Global in 1987, and Telecom*USA in 1990. It launched MCI Mail in 1983 and later built MCI.net, an important part of the Internet backbone. In 1998, WorldCom acquired MCI and the combined company became MCI WorldCom. The MCI name was later dropped; after WorldCom's 2002 bankruptcy, the company emerged in 2003 as MCI Inc.
