MCI Communications Unisex Quarter Zip Pullover
Product Details & Size Guide
MCI’s journey from a 1963 microwave relay plan to long-distance telephone service and data networks marks a defining shift in American communications. After launching MCI Mail in 1983, the company continued into the era of interconnected Internet infrastructure. This quarter zip pullover brings that history into a versatile layer for people who remember the brand or collect stories of changing technology. Its company story spans competition, expansion, a major merger, and the return of the MCI name in 2003.
Founded on October 3, 1963, as Microwave Communications, Inc., MCI began with a plan to build microwave relay stations between Chicago, Illinois, and St. Louis, Missouri. After regulatory approval in 1969, it developed regional links and began selling data transmission services in 1972. The company became a public corporation that year and, in 1975, started offering switched long-distance telephone service in competition with AT&T. Its legal challenge to AT&T, together with federal antitrust action, contributed to the Bell System breakup. MCI expanded through acquisitions including Western Union International in 1982, RCA Global in 1987, and Telecom*USA in 1990. It launched MCI Mail in 1983 and later built MCI.net, an important part of the Internet backbone. In 1998, WorldCom acquired MCI and the combined company became MCI WorldCom. The MCI name was later dropped; after WorldCom's 2002 bankruptcy, the company emerged in 2003 as MCI Inc.
