GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take the memory of a Southern retail landmark along on your next journey with this McRae's Passport Cover. Founded in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1902, McRae's began as a dry goods store and grew into a regional department store chain. Its first location outside Mississippi opened in Pensacola, Florida, in 1974, followed by further expansion into Alabama. The company later experienced several ownership changes, and most stores adopted the Belk name in 2006. A travel keepsake for former shoppers and retail history enthusiasts.
Samuel P. McRae founded McRae's in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1902 as a dry goods store. The business remained family-owned for decades and grew from $1 million in sales in 1955 to $10 million in 1970. Its first location beyond Mississippi opened in 1974 at University Mall in Pensacola, Florida, later known as University Town Plaza. In 1987, McRae's acquired 13 Alabama stores from Pizitz. The chain, known for strengths in home furnishings, men's apparel, and cosmetics, was acquired by Tennessee-based Proffitt's in 1993. McRae's retained its name and operated as a separate subsidiary. Proffitt's merged with Saks Holdings in 1998, and the combined company became Saks Incorporated; McRae's joined its Southern Department Store Group. Charlotte-based Belk bought Proffitt's and McRae's in a deal completed in July 2005. On March 8, 2006, most McRae's stores became Belk stores, with three excluded. Saks retained the Tuscaloosa and Gadsden locations for conversion to its Parisian chain; both later became part of the Parisian locations sold to Belk. The Mall of Louisiana location in Baton Rouge became a Dillard's store.
