$4.99
Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep a small piece of communications history close with this Double-Sided Keychain Charm honoring MediaOne Group, Inc. The name emerged as US West expanded beyond telephone service, following its 1996 acquisition of Continental Cablevision. MediaOne's short standalone era connected cable offerings such as MediaOne Express, RoadRunner and Hiway1 with a larger story of acquisition and change. For company-history collectors, this charm marks the path from regional telephone businesses through AT&T Broadband and into Comcast ownership.
MediaOne Group, Inc. emerged from US West's expansion into cable television and internet services. US West acquired Continental Cablevision in 1996 for $5.3 billion in stock and renamed it MediaOne, following the earlier adoption of that name by Wometco/GTC. In 1998, US West separated its telephone and non-telephone businesses; the company taking the US West, Inc. name transferred its communications and directory publishing divisions to a new entity, while the split took effect on June 12. Chuck Lillis became MediaOne's CEO. The company had roots in three regional telephone businesses: Mountain Bell, based in Denver, Northwestern Bell in Omaha, and Pacific Northwest Bell in Seattle. Its cable offerings included MediaOne Express, MediaOne RoadRunner and Hiway1. After Comcast bid for MediaOne in 1999, AT&T offered about $62 billion and paid a $1.5 billion break-up fee; AT&T acquired MediaOne in 2000. The assets subsequently became part of AT&T Broadband, which Comcast acquired in 2002. MediaOne was then known as Comcast MO Group, Inc. Its corporate history traces a path from regional telephone operations and cable acquisitions to successive ownership by AT&T and Comcast.
