Keep a small reminder of Portland retail history close by with this Meier & Frank square porcelain fridge magnet. Aaron Meier opened his Front Street mercantile in 1857, and Emil Frank became a partner in 1873, giving the business the name remembered by generations of shoppers. From its landmark downtown flagship to regional expansion across Oregon and Washington, the company's story remains closely tied to the Pacific Northwest. A charming keepsake for former customers, local-history fans, and department-store collectors.
Meier & Frank began in Portland, Oregon, in 1857, when Aaron Meier opened a small mercantile store on Front Street. After an earlier partnership ended, Meier established a new store and hired Emil Frank in 1870 and Sigmund Frank in 1872. Emil became a partner in 1873, giving the business its enduring name. The store survived the 1878 Portland fire and moved into a larger building in 1898 as it developed into a modern department store. Its landmark downtown complex grew over time; the Meier & Frank Building flagship opened in 1909, and later construction brought the complex to 17 stories. The company opened its first branch in Salem in 1955 and expanded to other Oregon and Washington communities. The May Department Stores Company acquired the business in 1966. In 2001, May used the Meier & Frank name for its Utah stores formerly branded ZCMI. Following May’s acquisition by Federated Department Stores in 2005, the chain was converted to Macy’s. The Meier & Frank name was discontinued after business on September 8, 2006, and the remaining stores became Macy’s the next day.
