Product Details & Size Guide
Remember Meis of Illiana, the department store that began downtown in Terre Haute in 1928 and grew to serve shoppers across Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. Its history includes a changing network of stores, a related jeans business called The Bottom Half, and a transfer to Elder-Beerman in 1989. This cuffed beanie offers a wearable nod to a familiar regional retailer and the communities that made its story part of local shopping history.
Meis, also known as Meis of Illiana, was a department store chain based in Terre Haute, Indiana. Lucien Meis and Salo Levite founded the business in downtown Terre Haute in 1928, and the original store stayed open until the early 1980s. The chain expanded beyond its founding city, with stores in Indiana communities including Anderson, Kokomo, Marion, and Elkhart; Illinois communities including Carbondale, Danville, and Mattoon; and Paducah, Kentucky. In Terre Haute, Meis also operated stores at Honey Creek Mall, Plaza North, and The Meadows. The company ran a jeans store called The Bottom Half; in 1972, both that business and the other Meis businesses were sold to Brown Shoe Company, now known as Caleres. Brown Group later sold the Meis chain, then comprising ten stores, to Elder-Beerman in 1989. The chain existed from 1928 to 1989 and operated 11 stores at its peak. Its story links a locally founded downtown retailer to regional expansion, a related jeans business, and a late-1980s transfer to a larger department store operator.

This cuffed beanie carries a lived-in street energy—soft, warm, and quietly bold. The low-profile embroidery sits on the cuff like a personal insignia: a small, slightly distressed logo with a touch of red that reads as both vintage and current. It slips on easily and stays put through commutes, late-night walks, and chilly market runs, adding a subtle graphic edge without shouting.
Wear it with a worn denim jacket, layered knit, or an oversized coat. It works for creatives who like to curate a look that’s casual but considered, for city cyclists who need dependable warmth, or for anyone who favors compact, tactile details. The hypoallergenic acrylic knit keeps things comfortable against the skin while the 12" cuff gives you styling flexibility—fold it high for warmth or roll it low for a slouchier silhouette. This is a small, everyday piece that quietly completes an outfit and ages into its own personality.
