GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take a piece of Mervyn's history along on the daily commute, errands, or a quiet break. Founded in San Lorenzo in 1949, the California chain grew by serving suburban families with a lower-priced approach and a modest store format. Its story includes regional expansion, a period under the Mervyn's California name, and a later return to its original name. This tumbler gives longtime shoppers and retail-history fans a practical way to celebrate a brand that remains part of California shopping memories.
Mervyn's was an American department store chain founded by Mervin G. Morris, who opened its first store in San Lorenzo, California, on July 29, 1949. Its lower-priced approach and modest store format helped it appeal to suburban families. A second store opened at Fremont Hub in 1962, and by 1978 the chain had grown to more than 50 stores in three states. That year it was acquired by Dayton-Hudson Corporation, later known as Target Corporation, while retaining a separate identity. From 1995 to 2001, stores used the name Mervyn's California before returning to Mervyn's. Target announced a sale in 2004, and the chain was acquired by a group of investors that included Sun Capital Partners, Cerberus Capital Management, and Lubert-Adler Management. Mervyn's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 2008; the case became a Chapter 7 liquidation in October, and remaining stores were slated to close by year-end. In 2009, the Morris family bought back the company's intellectual property and announced plans for an internet-based relaunch. A later online-only store has been described as specializing in closeout and overstock merchandise.
