GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the morning with memories of Mervyn's, the California department store founded by Mervin G. Morris in 1949. Its accessible prices and modest store format appealed to suburban families as the chain expanded beyond its first San Lorenzo location. Later chapters included the Mervyn's California name and a return to Mervyn's before the stores closed in 2008. This coffee mug is a daily-use tribute to a familiar part of regional retail history, well suited to former shoppers and department store collectors.
Mervyn's was an American department store chain founded by Mervin G. Morris, who opened its first store in San Lorenzo, California, on July 29, 1949. Its lower-priced approach and modest store format helped it appeal to suburban families. A second store opened at Fremont Hub in 1962, and by 1978 the chain had grown to more than 50 stores in three states. That year it was acquired by Dayton-Hudson Corporation, later known as Target Corporation, while retaining a separate identity. From 1995 to 2001, stores used the name Mervyn's California before returning to Mervyn's. Target announced a sale in 2004, and the chain was acquired by a group of investors that included Sun Capital Partners, Cerberus Capital Management, and Lubert-Adler Management. Mervyn's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 2008; the case became a Chapter 7 liquidation in October, and remaining stores were slated to close by year-end. In 2009, the Morris family bought back the company's intellectual property and announced plans for an internet-based relaunch. A later online-only store has been described as specializing in closeout and overstock merchandise.
