GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Mark your travels with a tribute to Mid-Continent Airlines, the carrier that grew from a 1928 flight school in Sioux City into a network serving communities across the central United States. Its route story reached from the northern states to Louisiana and Texas, with Kansas City as its base in its final years. The 1952 combination with Braniff closed one chapter and carried the airline's history into another. A thoughtful travel keepsake for aviation and company-history collectors.
Mid-Continent Airlines began in 1928 as a flight school at Rickenbacker Airport in Sioux City, Iowa, founded by Arthur S. Hanford Sr. and his son, Arthur S. Hanford Jr. It grew into Hanford's Tri-State Airlines, offering charter and scheduled service across the central United States. In 1934, it received air mail routes and briefly moved its headquarters to Minneapolis before returning to Sioux City. Following Arthur Jr.'s death in 1935, new ownership took shape under Thomas Fortune Ryan III. The company was incorporated in Delaware in 1936 and began air-carrier operations as Hanford Airlines; its name changed to Mid-Continent Airlines in 1938 as service expanded around Tulsa and the central oil region. After wartime cargo, training, and aircraft-modification work, it resumed growth, adding Gulf Coast destinations and newer aircraft, including DC-3s and Convair 240s. Based in Kansas City by the time of its final years, the airline served a broad network from the northern central states to Louisiana and Texas. Braniff International Airways acquired it on August 16, 1952, after Civil Aeronautics Board approval. Mid-Continent's routes and aircraft joined Braniff's network, and its name and Chief Wapello logo are administered as Braniff intellectual property.
