Keep a small reminder of railroad history close with the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad Double-Sided Keychain Charm. The Katy began with a network rooted in Kansas and expanded through Oklahoma and Texas, reaching Dallas in 1886 and San Antonio in 1901. Its familiar name, passenger service, and enduring trail connections offer plenty to appreciate in a compact keepsake. Add it to your keys or bag, or share it with a rail enthusiast who enjoys the stories behind the routes that connected communities across the region.
The Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway was incorporated in Junction City, Kansas, in May 1870. It acquired the Union Pacific Railway, Southern Branch, established in 1865, along with several smaller railroads that formed the basis of its network. The Katy laid its first rails across the Kansas border on June 6, 1870, and became the first railroad to enter Texas from the north. Its routes expanded through Oklahoma and Texas, reaching Dallas in 1886, Waco in 1888, Houston in April 1893, and San Antonio in 1901. In the 1890s, the railroad’s timetable abbreviation and stock symbol, KT, helped give rise to the nickname “the Katy.” Its network served Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, with access to Galveston through a jointly owned railroad. From 1915 to January 4, 1959, it operated the Texas Special with the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway. In 1988, the Missouri Pacific Railroad and its owner purchased the Katy; the Katy merged into Missouri Pacific on December 1, 1989. Missouri Pacific is now part of the Union Pacific Railroad system. Former routes later became trails, including the Katy Trail State Park in Missouri.
