The Missouri Pacific Railroad, commonly known as MoPac and reporting as MP, grew from the Pacific Railroad, where ground was broken in St. Louis on July 4, 1851. Its first track opened in 1852, and after Civil War interruption the line reached Kansas City in 1865. Following a debt crisis, new investors reorganized the Pacific Railroad as the Missouri Pacific Railway in 1872. Jay Gould controlled the road from 1879 to 1892, developing a system across Colorado, Nebraska, Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana. After bankruptcy in 1915, the company merged with the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway and was reorganized as the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1917. It later gained interests in major Texas lines including the Gulf Coast Lines, International-Great Northern, and Texas and Pacific. Reorganized again in 1956, MoPac became part of the Union Pacific system after a 1982 merger; the full legal merger into Union Pacific Railroad became official on January 1, 1997.
