Missouri Pacific Railroad, commonly called MoPac and reporting as MP, grew from the Pacific Railroad, whose ground was broken in St. Louis on July 4, 1851. Its first track opened in 1852, and after Civil War interruption the line reached Kansas City in 1865. A debt crisis led to its 1872 reorganization as the Missouri Pacific Railway. Jay Gould controlled the system from 1879 to 1892, expanding it through Colorado, Nebraska, Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana. Following bankruptcy in 1915, the line merged with the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway and was reorganized as the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1917. It later added or controlled important Texas lines including the Gulf Coast Lines, International-Great Northern, and Texas and Pacific. Union Pacific Corporation agreed to purchase MoPac in 1980; the transaction took effect December 22, 1982. Missouri Pacific retained its identity for years, but its full merger into Union Pacific Railroad became official January 1, 1997.
