National City began as the City Bank of Cleveland, organized on May 17, 1845, by Cleveland businessmen Reuben Sheldon and Theodoric C. Severance. In 1865 it became National City Bank of Cleveland, and in April 1973 National City Corporation was formed as its holding company, enabling expansion beyond Cuyahoga County. The company grew through acquisitions across Ohio and into Kentucky, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Missouri, Florida, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Major transactions included Integra Financial Corporation in 1996, First of America in 1998, and Provident Financial Group in 2004. The corporation offered commercial and retail banking, mortgage services, consumer finance, and asset management; its subsidiary National City Mortgage was credited with making the first mortgage in America. In 2007 it ranked 188th on the Fortune 500 and reported about $140 billion in assets. PNC announced its purchase on October 24, 2008, and completed the acquisition on December 31. The National City name was retired on June 14, 2010, as banking operations transitioned to PNC.
