Product Details & Size Guide
Mark the season with a reminder of New York Airways and its unusual place in city history. Founded in 1949, the airline began scheduled passenger service in 1953, carrying travelers by helicopter between major airports and Manhattan heliports. Its Pan Am Building rooftop service, introduced in 1965, captured the ambition of mid-century urban flight. This ceramic ornament is suited to aviation collectors, New York history enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates the stories behind historic airlines.
New York Airways was founded in 1949 as a mail and cargo carrier serving the New York City area. Headquartered at LaGuardia Airport, it began scheduled passenger service on July 8, 1953, and may have been the first scheduled helicopter airline to carry passengers in the United States. Its early passenger fleet included Sikorsky S-55 helicopters, followed by S-58s in 1956 and Boeing Vertol V-44s in 1958. In 1962, the airline introduced Boeing Vertol 107-II Turbocopters and later operated Sikorsky S-61 helicopters. Passenger services connected airports including JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark with Manhattan heliports, the Pan Am Building rooftop, and other regional destinations. The airline also flew fixed-wing Twin Otter aircraft. Its Pan Am Building rooftop service began in December 1965, ended in 1968, and briefly resumed in 1977. Perry H. Young made his first flight for the airline on February 5, 1957, becoming the first African American airline pilot. After the 1977 rooftop heliport accident and the 1979 oil crisis, the company ceased flying on April 18, 1979, and filed for bankruptcy on May 18.
