New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad Youth Hoodie / Sweatshirt
Let young rail fans wear a piece of the Nickel Plate Road story. The railroad was organized in 1881 to connect Buffalo and Chicago, and full-system trains began running the following year. Its growth later extended toward St. Louis, before the company merged into Norfolk and Western in 1964. This youth hoodie or sweatshirt connects a recognizable name with the people, routes, and corporate changes behind American railroad history. It suits school days, family outings, and relaxed time spent celebrating a love of trains.
The New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, commonly known as the Nickel Plate Road, operated from 1881 to 1964 across parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. Organized on February 3, 1881, it was built to connect Buffalo and Chicago in competition with the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway. Its first trains ran over the full system on October 16, 1882. Ownership changed over time: the Seney Syndicate sold the railroad to William H. Vanderbilt in 1882, and the Van Sweringen brothers acquired control in 1916. Under president John J. Bernet, the railroad expanded through purchases of the Lake Erie and Western Railroad in 1922 and the Toledo, St. Louis and Western Railroad, also called the Clover Leaf Route, later that year. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway gained control in 1937 and ended its control in 1947. The Nickel Plate leased the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway in 1949. On October 16, 1964, it merged with Norfolk and Western Railway and other carriers. Norfolk and Western later combined with Southern Railway in 1982 to form Norfolk Southern.
