GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of the routes and communities that shaped New England rail travel. This New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad ceramic coffee mug honors the company formed in 1872, known to many as the New Haven or the Consolidated. Its network reached from New York and Connecticut toward Boston and Providence, and its legacy continues through successor services. A considered choice for railroad collectors, history-minded coffee drinkers and fans of regional transportation.
Formed on July 24, 1872, through the merger of the New York and New Haven Railroad and the Hartford and New Haven Railroad, the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad served southern New England and became widely known as the Consolidated or the New Haven. Its predecessors had opened routes between New Haven, Hartford, Springfield and New York by 1848. Through leases and acquisitions, the company expanded toward Boston, Providence and other regional destinations. Under J. P. Morgan’s influence from the 1890s, its network grew to more than 2,000 track miles by 1912, including rail, trolley and steamship interests. Debt and road competition contributed to bankruptcy in 1935; the railroad emerged in 1947 with a reduced system, then entered bankruptcy again in 1961. Its rail operations ended when its assets joined Penn Central on December 31, 1968. The former network later became part of services including Metro-North’s New Haven Line, Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, Shore Line East and Hartford Line, as well as regional freight routes. The company’s corporate reorganization was approved in 1980.
