The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, better known as the New Haven, formed in 1872 and grew into a network serving communities across southern New England. Earlier routes had already linked New Haven, Hartford, Springfield and New York, making the railroad part of a long story of travel and connection. Formed on July 24, 1872, through the merger of the New York and New Haven Railroad and the Hartford and New Haven Railroad, the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad served southern New England and became widely known as the Consolidated or the New Haven. Its predecessors had opened routes between New Haven, Hartford, Springfield and New York by 1848. Through leases and acquisitions, the company expanded toward Boston, Providence and other regional destinations. Under J. P. Morgan’s influence from the 1890s, its network grew to more than 2,000 track miles by 1912, including rail, trolley and steamship interests. Debt and road competition contributed to bankruptcy in 1935; the railroad emerged in 1947 with a reduced system, then entered bankruptcy again in 1961. Its rail operations ended when its assets joined Penn Central on December 31, 1968. The former network later became part of services including Metro-North’s New Haven Line, Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, Shore Line East and Hartford Line, as well as regional freight routes. The company’s corporate reorganization was approved in 1980.
