NeXT Backpack
NeXT began in California in 1985, bringing together Steve Jobs and former Apple employees to create computers for higher education and business. Its NeXT Computer arrived in 1988, followed by the NeXTcube and NeXTstation in 1990. Though the company left hardware in 1993, its software helped shape the early web and later Apple operating systems. This backpack brings that distinctive chapter of technology history along for everyday outings, campus days, and trips for fans of influential computing brands.
NeXT was founded in 1985 in California by Steve Jobs and former Apple employees to build workstations for higher education and business. The company introduced the NeXT Computer in 1988 and released the NeXTcube and NeXTstation in 1990. Its hardware had limited commercial success, but NeXTSTEP, its object-oriented operating system and development environment, became influential. NeXT also developed WebObjects and partnered with Sun Microsystems on the OpenStep specification. In 1993, the company left the hardware business, changed its name to NeXT Software, Inc., and focused on software, including OPENSTEP for Mach. Its workstations and software were used to develop the first web server and browser, as well as Doom and Quake. Apple announced its acquisition of NeXT in December 1996 and completed the $427 million deal in February 1997. Jobs returned to Apple as an advisor and later became its CEO. Apple built Rhapsody, Mac OS X, and later macOS on NeXT software technologies, carrying NeXT's work into a new era of Apple operating systems.
