NeXT made its mark by taking workstation ideas into new territory, then carrying its influence forward through software. Founded in 1985, the company introduced the NeXT Computer in 1988 and moved from hardware to software in 1993. Its tools are part of the story of the early web and the foundations of later Apple operating systems. These golf balls celebrate a notable chapter in computing history, making them a considered pick for golf outings, technology enthusiasts, and collectors drawn to the NeXT name.
NeXT was founded in 1985 in California by Steve Jobs and former Apple employees to build workstations for higher education and business. The company introduced the NeXT Computer in 1988 and released the NeXTcube and NeXTstation in 1990. Its hardware had limited commercial success, but NeXTSTEP, its object-oriented operating system and development environment, became influential. NeXT also developed WebObjects and partnered with Sun Microsystems on the OpenStep specification. In 1993, the company left the hardware business, changed its name to NeXT Software, Inc., and focused on software, including OPENSTEP for Mach. Its workstations and software were used to develop the first web server and browser, as well as Doom and Quake. Apple announced its acquisition of NeXT in December 1996 and completed the $427 million deal in February 1997. Jobs returned to Apple as an advisor and later became its CEO. Apple built Rhapsody, Mac OS X, and later macOS on NeXT software technologies, carrying NeXT's work into a new era of Apple operating systems.
