NL Industries began business in Philadelphia in 1772. After a series of mergers, the name National Lead Company came into use in 1891. National Lead was among the 12 original stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average when the index was created on May 26, 1896. In 1907, the company entered the consumer market for titanium paints with its Dutch Boy product line. Artist Lawrence Carmichael Earle created the Dutch Boy Painter, which served as the company’s symbol for many years. NL Industries sold the Dutch Boy brand to Sherwin-Williams in 1980, two years after a federal directive banning manufacture of lead house paint took effect. The company adopted the name NL Industries in 1971. Its later corporate history includes CompX International, founded in 1993 and acquired in part by NL Industries in September 2004, when NL completed the purchase of a 68 percent interest. CompX sold its Furniture Components operations in December 2012. NL Industries is based in Dallas, Texas, and its history includes lead smelting, paint, security products, furniture components, and marine components. A California lead paint liability case resulted in NL Industries settling its part of the suit in May 2018.
