Give your everyday desk a connection to Norfolk and Western Railway history with this Foldable Mobile Phone Display Stand. N&W’s story spans early predecessor lines, the railway’s 1881 reorganization, and its long association with Roanoke, Virginia. Collectors remember its coal-hauling roots, locomotives built at the Roanoke Shops, and transition into the Norfolk Southern system. It makes a practical addition to a work area or bedside table and a distinctive choice for railroad enthusiasts who like history close by as they go about their day.
The Norfolk and Western Railway, commonly known as the N&W, grew from railroads dating to 1838 and was formed through more than 200 mergers between 1838 and 1982. In 1870, the Norfolk and Petersburg, South Side, and Virginia and Tennessee railroads combined as the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad. Reorganized and renamed Norfolk and Western in 1881, the company was headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia, for most of its existence. Its expansion opened the Pocahontas coalfields and made coal its primary commodity. The railway built steam locomotives and hopper cars at its Roanoke Shops; in 1960 it became the last major U.S. railroad to end regular steam locomotive use. It merged with longtime rival the Virginian Railway in 1959. Later acquisitions, including the Nickel Plate Road and Wabash, extended its reach across the Midwest. In 1980, N&W and Southern Railway joined under the Norfolk Southern Corporation holding company. Southern Railway was renamed Norfolk Southern Railway in 1982, and N&W came under its control. In 1986, N&W merged with Southern Railway to form today’s Norfolk Southern Railway.
