North Central Airlines began as Wisconsin Central Airlines, founded in 1944 in Clintonville, Wisconsin, by executives of the Four Wheel Drive Auto Company. Scheduled service among six Wisconsin cities began in 1946. The company moved to Madison in 1947, and its first Lockheed Electra 10A carried the Herman the duck logo in 1948. Certificated Electra flights to 19 airports began on February 25, 1948. In 1952 headquarters moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the airline adopted the North Central name. Its network and fleet grew from DC-3s and Convair turboprops to Convair 580s and DC-9 jets; it was the last local service carrier to fly the DC-3, ending that service in early 1969. The airline served the Midwest and later added routes to cities including Denver, New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C. In July 1979 it merged with Southern Airways to form Republic Airlines. Republic acquired Hughes Airwest in 1980. In 1986 Republic merged with Northwest Orient Airlines, which became Northwest Airlines. Northwest later merged into Delta Air Lines, with the merger finalized in early 2010. These transitions connect North Central's regional airline history to the present-day Delta successor brand.
