Introduce a little one to a memorable name in Canadian history with this North West Company infant bodysuit. The Montreal firm began with roots in a 1779 organization and grew through partnerships, trading posts, and journeys west across the interior. Its story is connected to Grand Portage, Fort William, and a 1821 merger agreement that ended its independent operation. The name returned in 1990, adding a modern turn to its history. A charming choice for families who enjoy sharing stories of Canada’s past.

The North West Company was a Montreal-based fur-trading business whose roots are traced to a 16-share organization formed in 1779. It was officially established on a long-term basis in the winter of 1783–1784, with offices on Vaudreuil Street. In 1787, it merged with Gregory, McLeod and Co., bringing explorer Alexander Mackenzie into the partnership. The company’s partners met at Grand Portage on Lake Superior each summer; the depot later moved to Fort William. Its traders and explorers extended operations west across the interior, while competition with the Hudson’s Bay Company intensified. In 1804, it absorbed the rival XY Company, which held a 25 percent interest in the combined business. Conflict over trade and territory continued, including violence at Seven Oaks in 1816. Under pressure from the British government, the North West Company signed a merger agreement with the Hudson’s Bay Company in July 1821, ending its independent operation. Its former trading posts became part of the enlarged company, whose northern division was later headquartered at Lachine near Montreal. In 1987, northern trading posts were sold to an employee consortium, which revived the North West Company name in 1990 for a Winnipeg-based grocery and merchandise business.
