GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of a distinctive chapter in Chicago-area grocery history. Omni Superstore began in Orland Park in 1987, where Dominick's introduced a warehouse-inspired supermarket concept with an expansive format and unusually named departments. The chain grew across the Chicago region and into Northwest Indiana, then began converting to Dominick's Fresh format in 1997. This mug makes a thoughtful keepsake for former Omni shoppers, regional retail collectors, and anyone interested in how familiar supermarket names evolve over time.
Omni Superstore was a Chicago-area supermarket chain created by Dominick's Finer Foods to answer the arrival of low-price, warehouse-style grocery competition. Its first store opened in April 1987 at Lake View Plaza in Orland Park, Illinois, near 159th Street and LaGrange Road. Dominick's described the concept as a more distinctive take on a warehouse grocery store. Over the following decade, 17 more locations opened in the Chicago metropolitan area, and the chain also entered Northwest Indiana in 1991 with a store in Schererville. In October 1997, Dominick's announced that Omni stores would be converted to its Fresh format, citing weaker performance than its other stores. The Schererville location became a Dominick's in 1997 and closed in 1999. Dominick's was purchased by Safeway in 1998; the Fresh concept was later eliminated and some underperforming stores closed. The Hammond, Indiana, location opened as a Dominick's in January 1999 and shut seven months later. The Omni name also appeared on organic store-brand foods at Dominick's and other Safeway stores. Chicago grocer Bob Mariano later led Mariano's, whose store design and operating model were described as similar to the Omni he had run.
