GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Bring a piece of Akron's department store story into everyday wear with an O'Neil's Embroidered Dad Cap Hat. Founded in 1877 as a downtown dry goods shop, O'Neil's expanded across northeastern Ohio and became part of the region's shopping history. Its downtown Akron store was remembered for expansive display windows and animated holiday scenes, while the name itself was retired in 1989. For collectors, former customers, and Ohio heritage enthusiasts, this cap nods to a distinct chapter in local retail history.
O'Neil's was an American department store chain founded in 1877, when Michael O'Neil and Isaac Dyas opened a dry goods store at 114 East Market Street in Akron, Ohio. After Dyas died in 1892, the business became the M. O'Neil Co. May Department Stores acquired it in 1912 for $1 million. A new downtown Akron store opened in 1927 and remained until the late 1980s. O'Neil's expanded across the Akron and Canton areas, with branches in nearby communities and malls. The downtown store was known for large display windows and elaborate animated holiday scenes. In 1989, the downtown store closed and the remaining O'Neil's locations merged with May Company Ohio; the O'Neil's name was retired. May Company Ohio was later merged into its Pittsburgh division, Kaufmann's, in 1993. The chain's history connects a local Akron dry goods shop with regional department-store growth and successive corporate consolidations.
