Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Company was a Seattle-based Bell System local exchange carrier serving Oregon, Washington, and northern Idaho. Its regional lineage reaches to the Sunset Telephone-Telegraph Company, which opened in Seattle on March 7, 1883, with 90 subscribers. Sunset was reincorporated in 1899 and merged into Pacific Telephone and Telegraph in 1917. Pacific Telephone Northwest was created as a division on February 1, 1960, before Pacific Northwest Bell was incorporated on March 27, 1961. Approved by the Washington Public Service Commission on June 5, the new company separated at midnight on July 1, 1961. One early assignment was building telephone service for the Seattle World's Fair, which opened April 21, 1962. In the AT&T breakup, Pacific Northwest Bell joined US West on January 1, 1984. Its operating companies began doing business as US West Communications in 1988 and were merged into Mountain Bell in 1991, which became US West Communications. US West merged with Qwest in 2000; Qwest joined CenturyLink in 2011, and the business has used the Lumen Technologies brand since 2020.
