Product Details & Size Guide
Add a piece of California aviation history to your workspace with this Pacific Southwest Airlines mouse pad. PSA started in 1949 with weekly service linking San Diego and Oakland through Burbank, and grew into a recognizable carrier with smile-nosed aircraft and a famously friendly identity. Its story spans the rise of intrastate air travel and the changes brought by deregulation. A fitting desk pick for airline historians, PSA collectors, and fans of California travel.
Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) was a low-cost airline headquartered in San Diego, California, and operated from 1949 to 1988. Kenny Friedkin began the airline on May 6, 1949, with a weekly San Diego–Oakland service via Burbank using a leased Douglas DC-3. PSA grew into a major California intrastate carrier, adding San Francisco service in 1951 and later serving Los Angeles International Airport. Its smile-nosed aircraft and “The World's Friendliest Airline” slogan became recognizable parts of its identity. The airline went public in 1963 and expanded beyond California after federal deregulation began in 1978, including service to other western states and Mexico. Its results in the newly deregulated market disappointed. On December 8, 1986, USAir agreed to purchase PSA; the transaction closed on May 29, 1987, and PSA was integrated into USAir on April 9, 1988. USAir later became part of US Airways, which merged with American Airlines. PSA's low-cost California model also helped inspire Southwest Airlines. American Airlines Group continues to use the PSA name for its regional subsidiary, PSA Airlines.
