Remember a special chapter of Los Angeles neighborhood life with this Papa Cristo's ceramic ornament. The family business began in 1948 as C & K Importing, bringing produce from Greece, then grew into a restaurant, taverna, market, and catering service across three generations. Its home in the Byzantine-Latino Quarter, across from Saint Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, made it part of the city's distinctive dining culture. This keepsake honors 77 years of family history before Papa Cristo's closed in 2025.
Papa Cristo's began in October 1948 in Los Angeles, California, as C & K Importing, an import and export business founded by Greek immigrant Sam Chrys to bring produce from Greece. In 1968, his son Chrys continued the business and opened a Greek restaurant alongside the importing operation. He traveled through many parts of Greece to learn more about Greek food and its regional specialties. The restaurant later became a taverna, which opened in the 1990s, serving food made with ingredients and products brought from Greece through the family business. In 1990, the restaurant added catering for Greater Los Angeles and Orange County. In 2010, Chrys Chrys's youngest daughter, Annie, joined management, marking the third generation of the family to run the business. The restaurant and market operated in Los Angeles's Byzantine-Latino Quarter, across from Saint Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church. The business received local recognition, including a 2011 Zagat award for Best Greek Restaurant in Los Angeles. Papa Cristo's permanently closed on May 4, 2025, after 77 years in business; the article attributes the closure to high rent.
