The Pere Marquette Railway operated across the Great Lakes region, with routes in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Ontario and connections including Buffalo, Toledo, and Chicago. Incorporated on November 1, 1899, it began operating on January 1, 1900, bringing together the Flint & Pere Marquette Railroad, Detroit, Grand Rapids & Western Railroad, and Chicago & West Michigan Railway. Its first shops were in Saginaw; Grand Rapids became its primary rolling-stock repair center in 1905, at the Wyoming Shops. Reincorporated as the Pere Marquette Railway on March 12, 1917, it came under the control of Cleveland financiers Oris and Mantis Van Sweringen in the 1920s. A planned merger with other railroads was not approved, and the brothers sold their interest to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway in 1929. The Pere Marquette continued as a separate operation until its merger into the C&O on June 6, 1947. The C&O was later absorbed into CSX Transportation. In 1984, Amtrak adopted the Pere Marquette name for its passenger train between Chicago and Grand Rapids.
