Perry Drug Stores began in 1957, when founder Jack A. Robinson opened a pharmacy on Perry Street in Pontiac, Michigan. A second store followed in 1960, and the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1973. Perry grew into a Michigan-centered retailer, operating more than 200 drug stores at its 1980s peak alongside automotive-parts and discount health-and-beauty businesses. Its expansion included the 1984 purchase of Cook Drug stores in Flint and the 1985 acquisition of Apex Drug stores and other former Cunningham locations. Perry entered the Chicago market in 1989, but sold those operations the following year. In 1990, purchases of Revco locations strengthened its Detroit-area presence and extended the chain to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula; Perry also sold its Indiana and Wisconsin stores and its A. L. Price outlets. After losses and a shift back toward pharmacy retail, Perry sold Auto Works in 1988. Rite Aid acquired Perry in a deal completed in January 1995, taking ownership of its 224 stores and bringing the Rite Aid name to the Detroit area. Perry Drug Stores, Inc. remained an active Rite Aid subsidiary in the company’s 2023 bankruptcy filings.
