Wasendorf Sr.'s advisory firm, Wasendorf & Son. In 1990, as Wasendorf began moving operations from Cedar Falls, Iowa, to Chicago, the firm took the Peregrine Financial Group name. It was incorporated as a futures commission merchant in 1992. In 1998, Peregrine began developing an online trading platform with Jerome Bressert; the system was called BEST, for Bressert Electronic Systems Trading, and the online division became known as PFGBest. Bressert left in 2001, while the trading technology remained with the firm. In 2007, PFG introduced PFG Best Direct FX Express, an electronic forex trading platform, and received approval to build a new headquarters in Cedar Falls. The company later moved from Chicago to Cedar Falls in 2009. In July 2012, it was shut down amid an investigation into missing customer funds and filed for bankruptcy on July 10. The bankruptcy listed more than $500 million in assets and over $100 million in liabilities. The corporate and brand story therefore spans an advisory-firm predecessor, a brokerage identity, and an online trading division before the firm’s collapse.
