GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Carry a memorable piece of American retail history on your next trip with this Phar-Mor passport cover. The chain was founded in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1982 and became known for low-price promotions built around high-volume, low-margin selling. Its swift expansion, 1992 bankruptcy, return to business in 1995, and eventual liquidation mark a remarkable corporate journey. This travel accessory brings that story along for the ride and makes a distinctive choice for Phar-Mor collectors and fans of regional retail history.
Phar-Mor was a United States discount drugstore chain founded in 1982 by Michael “Mickey” Monus and David Shapira. Based in Youngstown, Ohio, it built its business around selling large quantities of merchandise at very small profit margins and promoted low prices through its Power Buying slogans. Some stores operated as Pharmhouse or Rx Place, names acquired in the mid-1990s from the F.W. Woolworth Company. In 1992, when Phar-Mor had more than 300 stores and 25,000 employees, the company filed for bankruptcy protection after losses and financial misconduct were exposed. It closed 55 stores and laid off 5,000 employees. Phar-Mor emerged from bankruptcy in January 1995 with 143 stores. A proposed merger with Green Bay-based Shopko, announced in 1996, was withdrawn the following year. Facing competition from major retailers and pharmacy chains, Phar-Mor filed for bankruptcy again in September 2001 and was delisted from the NASDAQ Stock Market that October. A judge approved the sale of its assets and inventory in July 2002, and liquidation sales began at its remaining 73 stores. Giant Eagle bought Youngstown-area assets in bankruptcy court; stores in the area were eventually sold to Marc’s.
