Product Details & Size Guide
Introduce a little one to a memorable name from early American motoring. Phianna Motors Company made luxury automobiles between 1916 and 1922, beginning with equipment acquired from SGV before developing its own models. The company moved from Newark to Long Island City under new ownership, where automotive designer M. H. Carpenter oversaw hand-built cars. Its brief run and distinctive history make Phianna a special choice for families who enjoy classic cars and sharing stories of the people and companies that shaped automobile history.
Phianna was an American luxury automobile manufactured from 1916 to 1922. R. J. Metzler created the Phianna Motors Company in 1916 after acquiring the equipment and production line of the debt-burdened SGV in May 1915. With industrialists John A. Bell and T. M. Pepperday, he moved production from Reading to Newark, New Jersey. The name joined Phyllis and Anna, the names of one of the company's twin daughters. Phianna first made a car based on the SGV, then developed its own models. In 1918, wartime use of the factory for tools and dies for the Wright-Martin Aircraft Company led to the sale of Phianna's assets. Miles Harold Carpenter and Texas rancher Carl M. Worsham acquired them and established a new plant at the end of 59th Street in Long Island City, New York. Carpenter, an automotive designer with experience at Pierce Arrow and Chalmers, oversaw hand-built cars, including updated models shown in 1919. The marque offered four- and six-cylinder engines and introduced safety glass, turn signals, and stop lights in 1919. Facing the depression of 1921, Carpenter decided to end production. The final car was completed in 1922 for John F. Norman.
