Product Details & Size Guide
From Philadelphia batteries to radios, televisions and aerospace systems, Philco built a company story that reaches across generations of technology. This bottle opener listing offers a casual way to celebrate that history at a home gathering, in a collection or alongside other reminders of classic electronics. It is a fitting conversation piece for Philco enthusiasts who recognize the Baby Grand and Predicta eras, and for anyone interested in the changing identity of a company that moved from batteries into many fields.
Philco began in Philadelphia in 1892 as Helios Electric Company, making carbon-arc lamps. In 1906, as Philadelphia Storage Battery Company, it entered battery production, first for electric vehicles and later for home charging. The Philco name appeared in 1919. After launching its successful Socket Power Battery Eliminator in 1925, the company entered radio manufacturing in 1928 and became the leading U.S. radio maker by 1930. Its products later ranged from home appliances and televisions to computers and aerospace systems. Notable designs included the Baby Grand radios of the 1930s and Predicta televisions introduced in 1957. Philco developed transistor technology and built early transistorized computers, while its technical work also extended to satellite communications and NASA tracking and mission-control systems. Ford purchased the company in 1961; its products adopted the Philco-Ford name in 1966. Ford sold non-automotive business operations to GTE in 1974, and GTE sold the Philco International brand to White Consolidated Industries in 1977. Philips acquired the company and Sylvania brand from GTE in 1981, and became the owner of Norelco in 1987. Today, Philips owns the Philco brand in North America, while Electrolux owns Philco International in other markets.
