Bring a bit of closeout retail history to your desk with this Pic 'N' Save Corporation mouse pad. Founded in Culver City in 1950, the retailer expanded across California and six other states before changing its name to MacFrugals in 1991. Remaining stores later became Big Lots, while the Pic 'N' Save name reportedly returned as a bargain store in 2020. The brand's winding path offers collectors and former shoppers a compact reminder of how American retail names can evolve and reappear.
William Zimmerman founded Pic 'N' Save Corporation in Culver City, California, in 1950. The closeout retailer grew to become, at one time, the second-largest chain of its kind in the United States. By 1985, it operated 90 stores in California and six other states. In 1991, the company changed its name to MacFrugals and later expanded into the Southwest and the South, markets it left in the late 1990s. Financial troubles led to many store closures in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 1997, Consolidated Stores Corporation acquired the remaining MacFrugals stores for $995 million in stock. In 2002, Consolidated Stores, by then known as Big Lots, converted those stores to the Big Lots brand. The article distinguishes this business from an unrelated Pic-N-Save chain based in northeast Florida. It also reports that Pic 'N' Save returned as a bargain store in 2020. By 2023, that name was used at locations in Anaheim and Whittier, California; the Anaheim location closed in 2024, leaving Whittier as the sole remaining location.
