Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company was an American vehicle manufacturer based in Buffalo, New York, and active from 1901 to 1938. Its forerunner, Heinz, Pierce and Munschauer, began in 1865 making household goods, including gilded birdcages. George N. Pierce took control in 1872; the business added bicycles in 1896 and built its first car, the single-cylinder Motorette, in 1901. The two-cylinder Arrow followed in 1903, and the larger, luxurious Great Arrow became its most successful early model. A Great Arrow won the 1905 Glidden Tour. The company became Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company in 1908. Its cars gained recognition for luxury and distinctive headlights integrated into the front fenders from 1914. In 1928, Studebaker gained control, and the companies shared engineering and dealer connections while remaining separate operations. Pierce-Arrow introduced a straight-eight in 1929 and the streamlined Silver Arrow in 1933. It also made trucks, fire trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, boats, and, from 1936, Travelodge camper-trailers. Unable to generate sufficient sales or development funds, the company became insolvent and closed in 1938. Seagrave Fire Apparatus bought equipment used to make its V12 engines.
