GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Bring a distinctive regional railroad story into everyday wear with this Pittsburg, Shawmut and Northern Railroad polo shirt. Formed in 1899 from five earlier railroads, the Shawmut Line grew into a roughly 190-mile system linking western Pennsylvania with New York. Its coal traffic, passenger service, and long years in receivership make it a memorable subject for railroad enthusiasts. A thoughtful choice for rail history fans, collectors, and anyone drawn to the story behind this independent line.

The Pittsburg, Shawmut & Northern Railroad, also called the Shawmut Line, was formed on August 2, 1899, by merging five small railroads in New York and Pennsylvania. Its name used the spelling “Pittsburg” from the company’s original charter. The system eventually included about 190 miles of standard-gauge track, running from Brockway, Pennsylvania, to Wayland, New York, with branches including routes toward Olean, Prosser, Moraine, and Hornell. Some predecessor lines had been narrow gauge. Connection costs, upgrades for coal traffic, and the failure of its principal bond underwriter contributed to bankruptcy in 1905. The railroad then operated in receivership until 1946, when its bankruptcy became a trusteeship. A separate route between Brockway and Freeport began construction in 1903 as the Brookville & Mahoning and was renamed the Pittsburg & Shawmut Railroad after confusion with the Boston & Maine. The PS&N leased, but never owned, that company from 1906 to 1916; after the lease ended, the railroads operated separately. Coal was the principal commodity, alongside passenger service and later gas-powered motor cars. PS&N operations ended on April 1, 1947. Parts of the line passed to the Pennsylvania Railroad and Erie Railroad; most tracks were later removed.
